Kalmah (del carelio para "hasta, hacia la muerte, la tumba".) Kalmah de Finlandia se especializa en una marca de death metal europeo de alta velocidad e influencia clásica, similar a la de las bandas de metal extremo como Cradle of Filth y Children of Bodom. El quinteto se formó en el otoño de 1999 luego de la desaparición de su primera encarnación, Ancestor. En menos de un año después de su nacimiento, Kalmah fue firmado por Spikefarm Records, una división del sello finlandés Spinefarm. En el otoño de 2000, la banda grabó su álbum debut para el sello en los estudios Tico-Tico, uno de los favoritos de sus compatriotas Sentenced y Amorphis. El resultado, Swamplord, es una variación agresiva, basada en dos guitarras, en el death metal, cuya atmósfera a menudo se ve realzada por teclados etéreos. Century Media Records recogió Swamplord para su distribución en América del Norte, y el disco se lanzó en 2001. La banda inmediatamente comenzó a ganar fans, expandiéndose de manera increíble, dieron algunos conciertos en finlandia antes de comenzar con su nuevo material. En Verano del 2002 Kalmah hizo varias giras en Finlandia y tocaron en el Wacken Open Air Festival, lo que fue todo un éxito. Swampsong fue un excelente material, mucha gente lo aclamaba, se dieron giras, todo iba muy bien, marchando a la perfección, hasta que en el 2004 Pasi Hiltula decide dejar la banda. La banda comenzó entonces a hacer audiciones para el nuevo miembro, ahi conocieron a Marco Sneck (Poisonblack) formando con el, el nuevo quinteto.
